João Álvaro Carvalho is an Adjunct Professor at the United Nations University (UNU-EGOV) since 2015.
He is also Full Professor in the Department of Information Systems, School of Engineering, University of Minho, Portugal. He is a senior researcher at the ALGORITMI R&D Centre, and a Guest Professor at the United Nations University Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance (UNU-EGOV) in Guimarães, Portugal.
He received his undergraduate degree in Systems Engineering and Informatics from the University of Minho in 1983, followed by a doctoral degree from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK, in 1991. With a focus on information systems (IS), João's academic activities span teaching, research, and outreach. His research interests encompass a broad range of topics including IS modelling and representation, IT-related enterprise development, e-governance, IS curricula and education, and research approaches and methods.
Throughout his career, João has held various management responsibilities across a diverse range of institutional roles. He has also provided scientific advice to research units, education agencies, and public entities. João is an active member of several scientific and professional associations, including the Association for Information Systems, the Portuguese Association for Information Systems, and the Portuguese Association for the Development of the Information Society.
